A new federal scholarship tax credit gives donors a dollar-for-dollar credit when they contribute to a scholarship granting organization (SGO). That means a significant new source of scholarship funding for private K-12 and charter schools, and the schools that prepare early will be best positioned to benefit.
The program takes effect January 1, 2027. Forming an SGO, securing approvals, and building donor relationships all take time. Schools that start now will be ready to accept contributions on day one, and those that wait may watch that funding go elsewhere.
